The
upfronts have made one thing abundantly clear: I'm going to have a lot of free time on my hands over the next eight or nine months.
Veronica Mars? Despite Dawn Ostroff's smoke-blowing/denial-enabling this morning,
it's so obviously dead. Gilmore Girls has already been buried. A month from now, The Sopranos joins it in the TV cemetery. Wow, that's a lot of bad death metaphors right there.
But I might not be feeling so mournful
if I had more than one appointment show coming back in the fall. (And speaking of that show, yes, I raced home tonight to see the Office finale, but I won't post about it until tomorrow. I came away with surprisingly mixed feelings that I'm hoping a rewatch will help me sort out. Also, I'm glad that the rumors about it being stretched to an hour turned out not to be true and am really looking forward to those 30 episodes.) Now I'm really hoping Friday Night Lights and/or Heroes wow me on DVD this summer.
As for new shows, there are four that pique my interest. Bionic Woman got a lot of positive attention this week. I first heard about it a while back, but it wasn't until it registered that it was being developed by Battlestar Galactica's David Eick -- pretty much your go-to guy for reimagining cheesy 70's sci-fi as something weightier -- and would co-star that show's awesome Katee Sackhoff (
who is apparently so good in the pilot that they're not killing her off in it as originally planned) and the excellent Mae "Ann Veal" Whitman that it became required viewing.
( Behold: potential. )Then there are two remakes of British shows. CBS has Viva Laughlin, its version of the very fun Blackpool that I doubt even Hugh Jackman will be able to make work. And over on NBC is The IT Crowd, its version of...The IT Crowd. But even with Graham Linehan (of Black Books and Father Ted renown) involved, it's hard to imagine Office-style lightning in a bottle being caught again. And finally, of course, there's Amy Sherman-Palladino's new half hour on Fox, The Return of Jezebel James.
Which brings me back to my initial problem. Along with the IT Crowd, it's a mid-season show. And Battlestar Galactica, Lost (thumbs up to the 2010 exit plan!), and (ahem) Torchwood aren't returning until 2008 either. Sure, winter will be great, but man, that's a long wait for properly full TiVo. And looking at the grid with the rumors about Lost being moved back to an earlier time slot in mind, I'm seeing a potentially problematic pileup on Wednesdays that my single tuner unit won't be able to sort out. Argh!
So, how about you? How's your TV schedule shaking out? Do any cancellations have you fuming? Which new shows are you anticipating with bated breath? Will you come over and hang out with me on my now-desolate Tuesday nights? Discuss!
